Who Qualifies For A VA-Covered Wig?
You may be eligible for a VA-authorized cranial prosthesis if you are experiencing medically related hair loss. Examples may include hair loss associated with:
- Chemotherapy or radiation
- Alopecia (all types)
- Lupus or autoimmune conditions
- Thyroid or hormonal disorders
- Burns, scarring, or trauma
- Stress-related or PTSD-related hair loss
Eligibility and medical necessity are determined by your VA clinical team through the applicable VA authorization process.
How To Request Your B’Laflairé Cranial Prosthesis Through The VA
Step 1: Complete Our Veteran Intake Form
Start by completing the B’Laflairé Veteran Cranial Prosthesis Intake Form below. Tell us about your hair-loss needs, desired hair type, texture, color, length, density, cap construction, measurements, styling preferences, and any scalp sensitivities or special concerns.
This information helps us understand exactly what you're looking for before your consultation.
Step 2: Receive Your Complimentary Private Consultation
A B’Laflairé representative will connect with you for a private consultation to review your intake form and discuss your desired cranial prosthesis.
Together, we'll finalize your custom specifications and prepare the appropriate quote and provider information that can be supplied to the VA when requested.
If your VA has already issued an authorization or contacted you about obtaining a cranial prosthesis, let us know so we can help determine the appropriate next step.
Step 3: Take Your B’Laflairé Provider Request To Your VA Care Team
Schedule an appointment or communicate with your VA Primary Care Provider, Dermatologist, Oncologist, or other appropriate healthcare provider regarding your medically related hair loss.
B’Laflairé can provide you with a Provider Request & Cranial Prosthesis Information Sheet containing your requested specifications and our vendor information. Bring this document to your VA provider and explain that you would like B’Laflairé to be considered as your preferred cranial prosthesis provider.
If you are initially told that you must choose from another supplier or catalog, don't be afraid to advocate for yourself. Ask whether your request can be reviewed by the appropriate VA Prosthetics and Sensory Aids Service (PSAS) and/or purchasing team, particularly if the standard options do not adequately address your medically documented fit, comfort, scalp sensitivity, texture, or other needs.
Final authorization and purchasing decisions are made by the VA.

Tired Of Being Offered A Wig That Doesn’t Meet Your Needs?
If you are a Veteran experiencing medically related hair loss due to Alopecia (Areata, Totalis, Traction, or Cicatricial), chemotherapy, radiation, severe scalp trauma, lupus, burns, scarring, or another qualifying medical condition, you may be eligible for a cranial prosthesis through your VA healthcare benefits.
Too often, Veterans believe they have to simply accept the first wig or catalog option presented to them — even when that option may be uncomfortable, irritate a sensitive scalp, lack the appropriate fit, or fail to resemble their natural hair texture and appearance.
At B’Laflairé, we want Veterans to understand that “this is what we normally offer” does not mean you cannot ask questions or advocate for your individual medical and prosthetic needs.
If a standard synthetic wig causes irritation, does not accommodate your scalp condition, does not fit appropriately, or otherwise does not meet your medically documented needs, tell your VA healthcare provider and Prosthetic & Sensory Aids Service (PSAS) team.
Don’t Let The First “No” End The Conversation.
If you are told that you must select from a particular catalog or that B’Laflairé cannot be used because we are not on a local supplier list, ask questions.
Explain why the standard option does not adequately meet your needs. If you experience scalp sensitivity, irritation, discomfort, fit problems, or require a particular construction or hair option because of your condition, discuss those concerns with your clinician and ask that they be documented when medically appropriate.
A Local Vendor List Doesn’t Mean You Should Stop Advocating For Your Needs.
B’Laflairé is a federal/VA vendor providing custom cranial prosthesis services for eligible Veterans. Veterans may present our information to their VA healthcare team and request B’Laflairé as their preferred provider.
Approval is ultimately determined by the VA based on medical necessity, authorization, purchasing requirements, and the individual Veteran's circumstances — but you absolutely have the right to ask, explain your needs, and request that your preferred provider be considered.
